In the fairytale, the boy get a piece of ice in his heart, making his soul cold. 

But he was saved, his heart warmed up and the ice melted.

In this story, the boy had a warm heart, but let it freeze to ice.

Only with a cold soul and a heart of ice will he save, instead of being saved.

That is how he reasons.
